Elephants walking beneath giant baobab trees in Tarangire

Tanzania

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees and, in the dry season, some of the largest concentrations of elephants in northern Tanzania, drawn to the Tarangire River.

Dry-season elephants

From about June to October the Tarangire River is the main source of water for miles around. Elephants, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest move into the park, and herds of elephants along the river are the highlight of a visit.

Baobabs and birds

Huge baobab trees give Tarangire its character. The park is also excellent for birds, with more than 500 species recorded, from ground hornbills to yellow-collared lovebirds.
