Mountain gorilla feeding in dense green forest

Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in south-western Uganda, protects a large share of the world's mountain gorillas in steep, ancient rainforest.

What a trek is like

Treks begin with a briefing at the sector headquarters. Rangers and trackers lead small groups into the forest; walking time varies from about two to eight hours depending on where the gorillas are. Good boots, rain gear, gloves for vegetation and a porter are all worthwhile.
