Mountain gorilla feeding in dense green forest

Destination

Gorillas, chimpanzees and the Nile

Uganda is greener and more varied than the classic savannah safari. Its headline experience is tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi, but the country also offers chimpanzees in Kibale, lions and hippos in Queen Elizabeth, and the Nile at Murchison Falls.

Planning a gorilla trek

Gorilla permits are the first thing to secure: numbers are limited per gorilla family per day. Treks can take from about two to eight hours in steep, muddy forest, and the minimum age is 15. Once the group is found, you have up to an hour with them.

Road distances are long — Bwindi is roughly nine to ten hours from Entebbe — so longer itineraries break the journey with Kibale and Queen Elizabeth, or you can fly to airstrips near Bwindi.
