Maasai Mara National Reserve
The Maasai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated reserve: rolling grassland in the south-west of the country, continuous with Tanzania's Serengeti, with resident lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and large herds of plains game year-round.
The Great Migration in the Mara
Between roughly July and October, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra move north from the Serengeti into the Mara. River crossings happen when herds gather at the Mara River, but their timing is unpredictable — a crossing can take hours to begin, or not happen at all on a given day.
Outside the migration months the Mara is still excellent: resident predators do not follow the herds, and there are fewer vehicles.
