Destination
Kenya is where we live and work. From Nairobi, most of the country's great wildlife areas are a day's drive away: the Maasai Mara to the west, Amboseli and Tsavo to the south, the Rift Valley lakes on the way, and Samburu and Laikipia to the north.
For a first safari, the Maasai Mara is hard to beat for big cats and open-plains wildlife. Pair it with Lake Nakuru's rhino sanctuary or Lake Naivasha for a change of scene, and Amboseli for elephants and views of Kilimanjaro.
Returning visitors often head north to Samburu, whose dry-country species — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and gerenuk — are not found in the south, or to Ol Pejeta on the Laikipia plateau for rhinos.
Our Kenya safaris travel by road in 4x4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs, built for rough park tracks and wet-season roads, and a good way to see the countryside between parks. Scheduled light-aircraft flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport can replace the longer drives on midrange and luxury trips.

Maasai Mara safari guide: when to see the Great Migration, how many nights to stay, how to get there from Nairobi, and Mara safaris from 2 to 14 days.

Amboseli safari guide: elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, the best time to visit, getting there from Nairobi and Amboseli safaris from 3 days.

Lake Nakuru National Park guide: rhino sanctuary, Rothschild's giraffe and flamingos in the Rift Valley, a natural stop between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara.

Lake Naivasha guide: boat rides among hippos, walking and cycling in Hell's Gate National Park and Crescent Island, two hours from Nairobi.

Samburu safari guide: the northern Special Five, elephants on the Ewaso Nyiro river, best time to visit and Samburu itineraries from Nairobi.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy guide: rhinos, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Laikipia wildlife below Mount Kenya.

Tsavo West and Tsavo East guide: red elephants, Mzima Springs and lava flows, and how to combine Tsavo with Amboseli or the Kenyan coast.

Mount Kenya trekking guide: Point Lenana on the Naro Moru, Sirimon and Chogoria routes, how long to allow and what to expect at altitude.

Nairobi guide for safari travellers: Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre and elephant orphanage, and practical tips for arrival days.
