The Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is a vast, intact volcanic caldera, around 600 metres deep, whose floor supports a resident population of wildlife — including one of Tanzania's few populations of black rhino — within a single view.
A day on the crater floor
Game drives descend into the crater early in the morning and climb out in the afternoon, with a picnic lunch at one of the designated sites on the floor. The rim is more than 2,000 metres above sea level, so mornings and evenings are cool; bring a warm layer.
Wildlife
Lions, spotted hyenas, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and elephant bulls are regularly seen, and black rhino are sometimes spotted, often at a distance. Flamingos gather on the crater's soda lake. Giraffe are absent, as the steep walls keep them out.
