Chimpanzee feeding on leaves in the forest

Uganda

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park, near Fort Portal, has one of the highest densities of primates in Africa and is Uganda's best-known place for chimpanzee trekking with habituated communities.

Chimpanzee trekking

Treks follow habituated chimpanzee communities with Uganda Wildlife Authority guides. Walking times depend on where the chimpanzees are feeding, and once they are found you usually spend up to an hour with them. Permits are limited, so we book them as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Primates and birds

Kibale is home to many other primates, including red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L'Hoest's monkey and grey-cheeked mangabey, as well as a rich variety of forest birds.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Just outside the park, the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary offers a guided walk on boardwalks through papyrus swamp. It is a good place for primates and birds, including the great blue turaco.

Fitting Kibale into a trip

Kibale sits between Fort Portal and Queen Elizabeth National Park, so many Uganda itineraries pair chimpanzee trekking here with a savannah safari and then gorilla trekking in Bwindi.
