Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls is Uganda's largest national park. Here the Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge before flowing on to Lake Albert; boat trips run towards the base of the falls, and game drives on the northern bank look for giraffe, elephants, buffalo and lions.

The falls

At Murchison Falls the Nile squeezes through a gap only a few metres wide and plunges into the gorge below. A walk to the top of the falls shows their full power, and launch trips on the river run towards their base, passing hippos, crocodiles and birds.

Game drives on the northern bank

North of the river, grassland dotted with palms supports Rothschild's giraffe, elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob and lions. Boat trips towards the Nile delta at Lake Albert give a chance of seeing the shoebill.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

On the drive from Kampala, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary protects southern white rhinos, and rangers lead guided walks to see them on foot.
