Planning

How many nights should you spend in the Maasai Mara?

One, two or three nights in the Maasai Mara? What each option gives you, and when it is worth staying longer.

By the Economic Adventure Safaris team, Nairobi · Updated

The Maasai Mara is five to six hours by road from Nairobi, which shapes how long you should stay.

One night

Our 2 Days Maasai Mara Budget Safari gives you an afternoon game drive and an early morning drive before the return journey. It is a real taste of the Mara when time is very short, but much of the trip is spent on the road.

Two nights

Two nights is the minimum we recommend. It gives you a full day in the reserve with a picnic lunch, plus evening and morning drives — enough time to explore different areas and wait at a sighting.

Three nights or more

Three nights makes sense in the migration season if you want to spend time at the Mara River waiting for crossings, for photographers, and on luxury trips with flights where travel time is shorter.

Many of our Kenya safaris include two nights in the Mara; our 9 Days Maasai Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha, Amboseli & Tsavo Luxury Safari and 12 Days Kenya & Tanzania Grand Circuit include three.
