Combining Kenya and Tanzania is one of the most rewarding ways to see East Africa, and most of our two-country itineraries cross by road.
The main crossings
- Namanga: between Amboseli/Nairobi and Arusha. The most-used crossing, about two hours from Arusha.
- Isebania–Sirari: west of the Maasai Mara, used to reach the Serengeti's western corridor.
What happens at the border
Your Kenyan guide takes you to the border post, where you complete exit formalities in Kenya and entry formalities in Tanzania. On most itineraries you then meet your Tanzanian guide or a shuttle on the other side, because safari vehicles are licensed for one country. Allow roughly 30 to 90 minutes.
Documents
You need a passport valid for at least six months with blank pages, and the correct visa or electronic travel authorisation for each country. Requirements differ by nationality and change from time to time, so check the official government sources before you travel. Keep any vaccination certificates you have been asked to carry with your passport.
Flying instead
On luxury itineraries we can use flights to avoid long road days — for example from the Maasai Mara via Nairobi to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
