What happens when it rains on safari?

How rain affects game drives, roads and your itinerary in East Africa — and why the green season can be a good time to travel.

By the Economic Adventure Safaris team, Nairobi · Updated

Rain in East Africa usually comes as heavy afternoon or overnight storms rather than days of drizzle. Game drives continue; your guide simply adapts.

Game drives

Vehicles have roofs that can be closed. Animals often shelter during a downpour and become active again straight after, and the light after a storm can be spectacular.

Roads

Some tracks become muddy or slippery, especially in the long rains. Your guide may choose different routes, and on rare occasions timings change. This is one reason 4x4 vehicles are standard in Tanzania.

The upside of the green season

  • Fewer vehicles and quieter lodges.
  • Lower prices at many camps.
  • Green landscapes, newborn animals and excellent birdlife.

What to bring

A light waterproof jacket, a dry bag or plastic cover for cameras, and quick-drying clothes.
