Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Laikipia

Rhinos and the chimpanzee sanctuary

Ol Pejeta is a not-for-profit conservancy that combines wildlife protection with cattle ranching. Its rhino programme protects black and southern white rhinos, and the conservancy is at the centre of work to save the northern white rhino.

Chimpanzees are not native to Kenya. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary cares for chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade elsewhere in Africa and can be visited during a stay.

Laikipia and Mount Kenya

The Laikipia plateau spreads north-west of Mount Kenya, and on clear mornings the mountain's jagged peaks rise over the conservancy. Lions, elephants, buffalo, reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra all live here, and the open country is good for spotting them.

Most routes pass through Nanyuki, a small town on the equator where you can stop at the equator line on the way north.

We quote camps and lodges in or close to the conservancy to match your budget and dates. On our road itineraries Ol Pejeta usually follows or precedes Samburu, three hours to the north.
