Red-dusted elephants of Tsavo gathered on the plains

Kenya

Tsavo West and Tsavo East

Tsavo West and Tsavo East together form one of Kenya's largest protected areas, between Nairobi and Mombasa. Tsavo West is volcanic and hilly, with the spring-fed pools of Mzima Springs; Tsavo East is open and flat, known for elephants dusted red by the soil.

Tsavo West

Tsavo West is hilly and volcanic. At Mzima Springs, clear water rising from under the lava fields feeds pools where hippos and crocodiles can be watched from the banks and from an underwater viewing hide. The Shetani lava flow and Chaimu crater show how recent the volcanic activity is.

Tsavo East

Tsavo East is flatter and drier, with long views across the plains. The Galana River, Lugard Falls and the Aruba Dam draw wildlife, and the park's elephants are often coloured red by dust-bathing in the soil. The Yatta Plateau, one of the longest lava flows in the world, runs along its western edge.

Combining Tsavo

Tsavo sits between Amboseli and the coast, so it fits naturally into a route from Amboseli towards Mombasa or Diani, or into a short safari from the coast. Allow at least a night in each park you want to see properly.
